My journey through full stack web development

Course Clicker Ruby on Rails App

Wow things have been busy these past couple of months! I actually finished the meat of this application in late June, right before I started working full-time as a Platform Engineer at Illumina July 6th! I was trying to push through and get everything done before then, but I didn’t manage to meet all the project requirements in time. However, I was able to finish this project and get it up and running in a working state for Rainbow Acres to use in early July! This application now functions as a live website at https://course-clicker.herokuapp.com/ and is currently being used by Rainbow Acres for their course registration and enrollment!

Rainbow Academy Sinatra App

Two years ago, I did a summer internship at Rainbow Acres, “a [residential] Christian community with heart that empowers persons with developmental disabilities to live to their fullest potential with dignitiy and purpse.” I was serving this community as an Information Technology intern, where I participated on a board of educators to brainstorm new computer/ IT methodolgies for launching and instituting an educational academy for adults with cognitive disabilities.

It’s been about 2.5 weeks since I started Flatiron’s Self-Paced Online Software Engineering program, and it’s already time for my first portfolio project. Despite COVID-19 wrecking most of my senior-year plans and activities, I’m actually very grateful to have this opportunity to learn software engineering and web development, which is much more than I was able to do at the University of California, San Diego. This program has been a great opportunity for me to learn new software development skills and pursue an interest that I previously have not had the time or resources to learn. I am super excited to present and talk about my project!

Why software development?

I currently attend the University of California, San Diego and will graduate with a Bioengineering: Bioinformatics degree in June 2020. I have only one class left to take Spring Quarter 2020. This class meets once a week for one hour and will be completed after 6 weeks of class. Due to COVID-19 online instruction and my light course-load, I felt like now would be a great time for me to take an immersive online coding bootcamp to improve my coding abilities and widen my career opportunities.
